Mental health, like addiction, carries a stigma that makes it difficult for many to discuss openly. Thankfully a lot of celebrities have been talking openly about their struggles with mental health, especially anxiety and depression, and two of the latest are Lili Reinhart and Emma Stone.
Emma Stone has struggled with major anxiety throughout her life and turned to her art to help deal with her emotions. When she was nine years old, she drew a picture that read: “I’m bigger than my anxiety.” She also drew a green monster that symbolized her fear. She told Steven Colbert that acting and performing improv helped her deal with her anxiety as well.
Lili Reinhart, star of Riverdale, also publicly talked about her anxiety struggles with W magazine. Her anxiety started to peak when she moved out to Los Angeles to try and get her acting career going. Once a major panic attack hit, she skyped her mother and said, “Mom, I’m not okay.”
Reinhart added, “I felt like my world was crashing. I didn’t want to admit defeat, but I was like, ‘I need to come home. My mental health is suffering, and it is making me physically ill.”
Reinhart got help in therapy, which she said: “really helped me build myself back up again.” She also started taking medication for anxiety, and soon got her coveted job on Riverdale.
Reinhart encourages people to speak out about anxiety, telling the Huffington Post, “For teenage kids, they feel a pressure to sweep things under the rug because they feel like they’re not important enough to have problems. People were like, ‘You have no reason to be upset. Your feelings are illogical.’ My message is that that’s not true. You don’t have to have a reason. Your feelings are validated by the fact that you’re feeling them.”
