Hope, it’s a four letter word that keeps you going when nothing else does. It’s the formula that fills seats for a losing team, that keeps a business going beyond the point of safety and gives one the feeling that maybe now, maybe this time, things will be different.
Hope is also an elixir for amazing possibility. Without hope we would write off the world and without hope, we would never be able to be a part of miracles.
So do we hope for the best and plan for the worst? Is it worth giving hope when the likelihood of success is small? Do we invest in hope or avoid the free fall that comes when hope fails?
These questions and more are asked often in Recovery by families and advocates alike, many of whom have experienced failure first.
There is no easy answer to the question rather a meditation of sorts:
A man is drowning in a river. A boat appears on the horizon and the staff toss a lifeline to the man. “No worries guys, god (insert higher power here) will save me. I believe in miracles”. The boat drives off followed in sequence by a bigger boat and a helicopter to which the man responds the same way.
Eventually the man slips under the water and washes up on shore barely breathing and is met by his friend (insert sponsor or other advocate here) who asks “why didn’t you take the help my friend!”. “I was waiting on my higher power”, he answers.
Answers his friend “your higher power sent you two boats and a helicopter, it was up to you to embrace the miracle and be a part of it”.
It is not healthy to simply hope. And it’s not healthy to give up without hope. Success comes when hope is met with hard work and a personal investment in the process. When a team is losing but fighting hard, their fans will brave the elements to see them through. When a family and their loved ones push on despite failure, those around them will rally as will the client and it is in these moments and under these circumstances that the true miracles happen.
Hope means Picking up your head, digging your feet in and fight for yourself and your loved one.
