Ten years ago, Jesse Metcalfe of Desperate Housewives wrote about his time in inpatient rehab on Instagram, where many in recovery often write about their experiences getting sober.
As Us Magazine, Metcalf took a picture of himself before he checked in to inpatient rehab after partying for three days. Metcalf checked in on March 19, 2007. “These were some of the darkest days in my addiction. How did I get here? What was I running from? And what was the cost?”
As it turns out, Metcalf is working on a movie called Steps and set up a crowdfunding campaign for it as well. Two years after getting out of inpatient rehab, Metcalfe told People, “When I finally made my way back home, I saw the look in my mother’s eyes. My self-destructive behavior was really hurting her. I said, ‘I have to face the demons that are driving this. ‘I had to do something strong to show my mother that I was going to make a major change.”
In creating his own movie about addiction, Metcalfe writes, “The disease of addiction is surrounded by stigma and misconception,” and in creating Steps, he wants to “tell the story of those who suffer in an honest way,” as well as “illuminate addiction’s lack of discrimination…the disease of addiction does not discriminate, ignoring race, religion, class, socio-economics, gender, as well as sexual orientation.
