One of the most important tools in the fight against anxiety and depression is exercise. And it’s important to be consistent as possible with exercise, or it can be detrimental to your mental health.

As the Independent reports, a study by the University of Adelaide found that if you stop “all forms of vigorous physical activity,” it can cause you to fall into a depression. The University of Adelaide conducted their research with a study of over 150 adults, with all them exercising at least three times a week for at least thirty minutes for three months.

Some who participated in the study fell into depression quickly when they stopped exercising. A source at the University of Adelaide said, “In some cases, ceasing this amount of exercise-induced significant increases in depressive symptoms after just three days.”

Another source at the University told the Independent, “Adequate physical activity and exercise are important for both physical and mental health. An extensive body of clinical evidence shows that regular exercise can reduce and treat depression.” Yet this study was conducted because there isn’t extensive research yet on the effects of how ceasing exercise can affect your mental health.

Judging by the results this study has gathered, it’s clear that keeping up a consistent exercise routine is important, and it’s especially important not to abandon it for any lengthy period of time.
