Does This Look Infected? No, that’s thankfully not something Deryck Whibley from Sum 41 is asking a doctor, it’s the name of the band’s hit album, which just hit its fifteenth anniversary. Whibley is thankful to be alive to celebrate this anniversary and tour after nearly dying from alcohol abuse four years ago.
As People reports, back in 2014 Whibley collapsed from liver and kidney failure at the age of 34. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he was put into a medically induced coma for three days, and he detoxed there for a month.
Today Whibley says he enjoys things more now that he’s sober, “which I wasn’t really expecting. I was having such a great time when I was drinking and partying and I thought sobriety would be boring, but it’s really not.”
As he’s thankfully nearing his 40s with his health intact, Whibley says, “I feel like everything gets better – and not because of drinking or not drinking. As you get older and you’ve been around longer and it’s still working after this long, it’s just a different feeling than it was in the beginning. When you’re so young and you have success, it goes by so fast that you don’t quite have the capability to appreciate it. When you get older and you realize how difficult it is to maintain a career, you can feel a sense of accomplishment and pride.”
