Which Meditation Is Right For You?

You have probably heard that meditation promotes physical, mental, and spiritual health. But did you know there is more than one way to meditate? Let’s take a look at the different kinds, and then you can make an informed decision as to which one is right for you.

–Breath awareness. Believe it or not, a simple form of meditation is simply being aware of how you’re breathing.

Find a comfortable, quiet place to sit, relax your body, and breathe through your nose in slow, even breaths for a few minutes. You will learn to relax your body and mind.

–Empty your mind. This can be achieved by focusing your awareness on your mind and body. Use a mantra, like “ohmm” or “uhmm”. This helps to clear your mind of thought.

–Walk to meditate. Meditation doesn’t have to be just sitting. You can actually walk and meditate.

Walking outside can clear your mind, calm your body, and energize your spirit. It doesn’t have to be outside. You can walk back and forth inside your home or office or gym. While walking outside, you will find more distractions, but this can be a good way to practice focus.

Instead of paying attention to sights and sounds, pay attention to how your feet feel when stepping, or your arms feel while swinging, or your legs feel while walking. This helps hone your thoughts to a single point, which is what meditation is all about.

–Mindfulness meditation. This is the meditation that focuses on the here and now, moment to moment. You can incorporate the use of an object if you like. Hold a pretty stone or marble or feather in your hand, look at it or close your eyes. Put your thoughts on how it looks and feels. This helps narrow your thoughts to a single point.

Meditation can be used along with proper diet and exercise to maintain overall good health. You don’t have to plunge deeply into meditation in order to benefit from it.

Practicing it a mere 10 or 15 minutes a day can help you feel better, inside and out.

There are many kinds of meditation, from basic to complex, and the level of spirituality you want to achieve is entirely up to you. It isn’t meant to replace your faith or spirituality. In fact, if you want to exclude the spiritual factor, you can.

Use meditation to your advantage. In today’s stressed world, we can’t have too many stress relievers, and a fidget spinner can only do so much.
