Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Anaheim Residents

Drug abuse treatment provides a pathway for people to make a positive change in their lives. Drugs and alcohol can damage a person’s life in many ways.  Substance abuse affects people financially, negatively impacts their careers, and puts a tremendous amount of stress on families and other relationships.  Loved ones often suffer almost as much as someone who is struggling with addiction, too. The negative effects on a societal level, including overdose deaths that have increased notably over the past two decades, continue to add up.  Local law enforcement and government officials in Anaheim California and across the country continue to develop programs and initiatives that help curb the negative impacts of substance abuse around the state and around the nation.

What Is MAT?

MAT is part of a comprehensive approach to addiction recovery that assists people to get through the cravings and withdrawal associated with stopping drinking or using drugs.  Medication can be part of a medical detox program where medical professionals and substance abuse treatment specialists help to ease the withdrawal process. In a medication-assisted treatment program, clients are administered prescription medication that curbs cravings and withdrawal symptoms.  A Medication Assisted Treatment Program is mostly associated with opioid withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal.

A Medically Assisted Treatment Program takes place in a hospital or drug rehab center.  It is an inpatient rehab program, meaning an individual stays in the treatment facility for the duration of the detox program.  Making a choice to take part in a medical detox program can be very helpful in reaching one of the first milestones of addiction recovery which is to be 100% alcohol, drug, and toxin-free.  Many people try to handle their withdrawal symptoms themselves and go through detox at home on their own. Individuals sometimes bargain with themselves and believe they have a better handle on their problem with substance abuse than is the actual reality.  Attempting to go through drug detox or alcohol detox at home can be dangerous for a number of reasons.

First, drug addicts who begin to experience withdrawal symptoms, which can happen just hours after someone uses for the last time, can quickly decide that they do not want to go any further without their substance of choice.  During this period they often make a deal with themselves that they will cut down on their drug or alcohol use so that they do not need to go through any sort of addiction treatment program.  Second, when someone relapses while trying to detox at home instead of in a residential treatment program, they may binge on their substance of choice or anything else they can acquire quickly.  These types of circumstances lead to overdose deaths.  Third, when a person is alone and going through withdrawal symptoms as part of a drug detox or alcohol detox, they are not receiving any of the counseling and behavioral therapies available as part of a residential treatment detox program.

What To Expect During MAT?

When you enter a MAT drug program at a hospital or drug rehab center, you will go through a fairly standard intake process.  Prior to your arrival, the insurance verification step will have already taken place so that our administrative staff can ensure you are taking advantage of all of your benefits.  Once the addiction center personnel have your general information, all other consultations will take place in private. You will be shown to your room and introduced to key staff members.  As part of the intake process, you will meet with members of the medical team so that you can have a full history and analysis completed.  They will go over aspects of your alcohol use disorder or other substance use disorders to determine parts of your treatment.  Everyone who has struggled with substance abuse has come to the point where they are about to begin treatment for alcohol addiction or drug addiction by traveling a different road.  This results in every patient in an addiction treatment program needing slightly different care in order for them to successfully begin their addiction recovery.

In addition to a medical workup, our clients also meet with our psychiatric staff. This helps determine the severity of each individual’s addiction, too, as substance abuse affects a person’s mind, body, and spirit. Once these steps are accomplished, an individual is ready to begin their medically assisted detox treatment.  One aspect of this is to identify what withdrawal symptoms a person is experiencing and where applicable, issue over-the-counter medicines to help curb the effects of the detox process.  Every type of substance has specific withdrawal symptoms but many overlap.  Medicine for nausea, dizziness, sleeplessness, body aches, headaches, and other typical drug addiction and alcohol addiction side effects can be administered. Most people take five to 10 days to completely remove all of the alcohol and drug toxins from their bodies. In some more severe cases, this can take two or three weeks.  During the entire time, our goal is to make our patients as comfortable as possible during the cravings and withdrawal phase of their rehab.

Another way we accomplish this during residential treatment is to ensure that drug addicts and alcoholics begin to live healthier lifestyles immediately.  This is important during treatment programs because many drug addicts and alcoholics disregard their overall health when they are using and drinking and it’s important for them to get back on track. Healthy meals, proper hydration, the right amount of rest and sleep as well as exercise are all part of a medically assisted detox program.  Last but not least patients can take part in individual therapy or group behavioral therapy sessions. This part of detox treatment programs can help people who are struggling with the effects of withdrawal see the positive path forward they are creating for themselves.

Once someone has completed the drug detox process, it is very important that they begin counseling and behavior therapies as part of a residential treatment or outpatient program for alcohol or drug rehab. Medical detox is an excellent relapse prevention step but people who have recently gone through withdrawal are very susceptible to using or drinking again without the support of a substance abuse rehab program. At The Detox Center of Los Angeles, we have several levels of care and many types of addiction treatment program options. These include intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs.
